Στο Παρίσι … με παιδιά!

Στο μυαλό των περισσοτέρων η πρωτεύουσα της Γαλλίας είναι άπιαστο όνειρο λόγω του υψηλού της κόστους διαβίωσης. Αστικός μύθος; Περίπου… Η αλήθεια είναι ότι το Παρίσι είναι μακράν η πόλη με το υψηλότερο κόστος διαβίωσης στη Γαλλία… Είναι όμως και μία από τις ομορφότερες πόλεις στον πλανήτη, οπότε αξίζει πραγματικά η επίσκεψη γιατί πρόκειται για εμπειρία ζωής!

Γίνεται λοιπόν το Παρίσι με παιδιά; Φυσικά και γίνεται με κάποιες προσαρμογές φυσικά, και σε αυτό που έχουμε ονειρευτεί σχετικά με την πόλη του Φωτός και στην ηλικία των παιδιών μας.

Πότε να πάω;

Έχοντας την τύχη να έχω επισκεφτεί την πόλη αμέτρητες φορές και σε όλες τις εποχές, έχω να σας πω ότι σίγουρα το off–season βοηθάει… Αποφύγετε λοιπόν τα Χριστούγεννα ή το Πάσχα (σε περίπτωση που το καθολικό συμπίπτει με το ορθόδοξο, αλλιώς είναι μία εξαιρετική ευκαιρία), τον Ιούλιο και τα 3ημερα, 4ημερα που βγάζουν μάτι! Προτιμήστε το φθινόπωρο, τον Μάρτιο, τον Ιούνιο, ενώ μια εξαιρετική ευκαιρία είναι να ταξιδέψετε τον Αύγουστο που οι Παριζιάνοι πηγαίνουν διακοπές οπότε το κόστος πέφτει και όλα γίνονται πιο εύκολα (ειδικά το παρκάρισμα σε περίπτωση που κινείστε με αυτοκίνητο).

Πόσες μέρες να μείνω;

Για πάντα είναι η προφανής απάντηση αλλά σε περίπτωση που αυτό δεν είναι δυνατόν προβλέψτε κατά τη γνώμη μας τουλάχιστον τέσσερις διανυκτερεύσεις για να πείτε ότι προλάβατε να πάρετε μια ιδέα από την πόλη των Φώτων και δεδομένου του γεγονότος ότι η μία μέρα θα είναι σίγουρα αφιερωμένη στον απόλυτο παιδικό προορισμό , την Eurodisney!

Πώς θα φτάσω;

Αποφύγετε τις απευθείας πτήσεις στο Charles de Gaulleκαι προτιμήστε μικρότερα περιφερικά αεροδρόμια όπως αυτό το Beauvais στο οποίο θα βρείτε συχνά εισιτήρια από Θεσσαλονίκη που ξεκινούν από 23 ευρώ! Μία εναλλακτική προσέγγιση είναι να πάτε στο Παρίσι μέσω Βρυξελλών. Οι πτήσεις για το Charleroi, το μικρό αεροδρόμιο των Βρυξελλών είναι καθημερινές και πολύ φθηνές. Από εκεί μπορείτε να νοικιάσετε αμάξι (το οποίο είναι η οικονομικότερη λύση και η ευκολότερη με τα παιδιά) και σε τρεις ώρες θα βρίσκεστε στο Παρίσι. Εναλλακτικά μπορείτε να πάρετε λεωφορείο (4,5 ώρες) ή τρένο, το οποίο όμως είναι ακριβότερο. Προσοχή! Τις περισσότερες φορές μπορείτε να πετύχετε καλές ευκαιρίες συνδυάζοντας τις δύο αυτές εκδοχές, να πετάξετε πχ για Παρίσι και να επιστρέψετε από Βέλγιο!

Πού να μείνω;

Δυστυχώς στο Παρίσι (όπως και σε άλλες μητροπόλεις) τείνει να υπάρχει μεγάλη αναντιστοιχία ανάμεσα στο κόστος των δωματίων και στις παροχές των ξενοδοχείων . Αποφύγετε λοιπόν τα φθηνά κεντρικά ξενοδοχεία γιατί σίγουρα θα βρεθείτε μπροστά σε δυσάρεστες εκπλήξεις σχετικά με την τιμή ή την καθαριότητα. Προτιμήστε ξενοδοχεία απομακρυσμένα εντός βέβαια πάντα του περιφερειακού σε όποιο από τα 20 διαμερίσματα (arrondissements) επιθυμείτε. Αποφύγετε να βγείτε εκτός Περιφερειακού, όμως, γιατί και η πρόσβαση στο κέντρο γίνεται πιο δύσκολη και, σε κάποιες τουλάχιστον περιοχές, υπάρχει θέμα με την ασφάλεια. Προτιμήστε τα διαμερίσματα 8ο-9ο-10ο, τα οποία είναι αρκετά κοσμικά, το 3ο εάν θέλετε μια πιο εναλλακτική και μοντέρνα γειτονιά και το 11ο αν σας ενδιαφέρει η νυχτερινή ζωή σε μια πιο πολυπολιτισμική και νεανική γειτονιά!

Οι παριζιάνοι αράζουν στον ήλιο σε κάθε ευκαιρία!

Τα ξενοδοχεία Ibis είναι πάντα μια ωραία επιλογή για τις οικογένειες αφού είναι καθαρά και σε λογικές τιμές με τις minimumπαροχές βέβαια. Ανεπιφύλακτα θα σας πρότεινα να δοκιμάσετε την Αirbnb για το Παρίσι αφού μπορείτε να βρείτε πραγματικά διαμάντια στην πλατφόρμα σε πολύ λογικές τιμές για ζευγάρι με παιδί ή παιδιά, αλλά και δύο οικογένειες! Ο,τι και να επιλέξετε, αν σε κάποια λογική απόσταση έχετε σταθμό metro, μην ανησυχείτε για τίποτα! Το Παρίσι έχει υπέροχο δίκτυο συγκοινωνιών, περπατιέται και μέσα σε μισή ώρα μπορείτε να βρεθείτε οπουδήποτε θελήσετε!

Bonus Tip: δεν αξίζει πραγματικά τον κόπο και τα χρήματα να κλείσετε πρωινό, αφού σε κάθε γωνία της πόλης θα βρείτε boulangeries–pâtisseries που προσφέρουν απίθανες επιλογές για πρωινό ή και μεσημεριανό όπως θα δείτε παρακάτω!

Πού να φάω;

Οπουδήποτε τρώνε οι Γάλλοι! Αποφύγετε τις τουριστικές επιλογές και τα κεντρικά σημεία. Δεν υπάρχει κανένας λόγος να φάτε πάνω στα Champs–Elysees, ενώ προχωρώντας μερικούς δρόμους πιο πέρα μπορείτε να βρείτε ένα συμπαθέστατο bistro! Η αλήθεια είναι ότι αν αποφασίσετε να κάτσετε σε εστιατόριο στο Παρίσι θα πρέπει να έχετε στο νου σας ότι θα πληρώσετε πολλά! Δεν ισχύει όμως το ίδιο για τα συνοικιακά bistro στα οποία μπορείτε να φάτε πολύ πιο οικονομικά ή τις γνωστές σε όλους αλυσίδες οι οποίες έχουν τις ίδιες τιμές με την Ελλάδα.

Μην παραλείψετε να φάτε τουλάχιστον μία φορά στο Bouillon–Chartier, το οποίο είναι ένα παραδοσιακό εστιατόριο-σουπάδικο όπου έτρωγαν εργάτες στις αρχές του αιώνα! Μπορείτε να απολαύσετε αυθεντική γαλλική κουζίνα σε τιμές πολύ χαμηλές και σε ένα περιβάλλον εποχής! Βέβαια η καλύτερη επιλογή είναι να μπείτε στους παραδεισένιους φούρνους της πόλης που μοσχοβολάνε βούτυρο από μακριά και πολύ φθηνά να αφήσετε τα μικρά να διαλέξουν αλμυρά και γλυκά κρουασάν, μπαγκέτες με τυριά και αλλαντικά πρώτης ποιότητας αλλά κρέπες όλων των ειδών! Είναι βέβαιο ότι στη Γαλλία όσο και να περπατήσετε, πιο αδύνατοι δεν πρόκειται να γυρίσετε!

Πού να πάω και τι να δω;

Η απάντηση στην παραπάνω ερώτηση διαφέρει ανάλογα με τις προτιμήσεις του καθενός και με την ηλικία των παιδιών που έχει μαζί του. Καμιά συμβουλή δεν μπορεί να αντικαταστήσει την προσωπική έρευνα: ανοίξτε οδηγούς, διαβάστε ταξιδιωτικά sites, ρωτήστε φίλους ή και εμάς στέλνοντας mail και μπορούμε να κατευθύνουμε τον καθένα ξεχωριστά ανάλογα με το γούστο και τις ημέρες που έχει στη διάθεσή του. Παρ’όλα αυτά έχοντας γυρίσει το Παρίσι όσο λίγοι σε όλες του τις εποχές ή τις εκδοχές έχουμε να προτείνουμε τα παρακάτω:

Περπατήστε!!!!

Το Παρίσι είναι μια ξεχωριστή, ανοιχτή γκαλερί τέχνης. Δεν χρειάζεται να μπείτε στα μουσεία του αν τα παιδιά δεν θέλουν ή εσείς θέλετε να μειώσετε τα έξοδα. Είναι μία τόσο όμορφη και αρχιτεκτονικά άρτια πόλη που δεν θα σας αφήσει να βαρεθείτε στιγμή! Μέσα από εξαιρετικές διαδρομές μπορείτε χωρίς κανένα κόστος να απολαύσετε τις χαρακτηριστικές hausmanniennesπολυκατοικίες, τις καταπληκτικές πλατείες όπως την Place de la Concorde και την Place des Vosges, να θαυμάσετε εξωτερικά υπέροχα κτίρια όπως την Opéra Garnier, το Λούβρο με την Πυραμίδα του και να αμολήσετε τα μικρά με τις ώρες να απολαύσουν παιχνίδι στους τεράστιους κήπους της πόλης (Jardindes Tuilleries, Jardin du Luxembourg, Parc Monceau) τρώγοντας κρέπες ή παγωτά.

Το επιβλητικό Λούβρο είναι εντυπωσιακό μέσα και έξω.

Εξάλλου μιλάμε για την πόλη που έχει εφεύρει ένα ιδιαίτερο όρο ειδικά για αυτή την δραστηριότητα: flânerie ονομάζουν οι Γάλλοι την άσκοπη βόλτα στην πόλη, χωρίς συγκεκριμένο προορισμό, χαζεύοντας τον κόσμο, απολαμβάνοντας την ομορφιά και ρουφώντας τα αρώματα του καφέ και του φρέσκου βουτύρου που παραμονεύουν στη γωνία του επόμενου δρόμου. Και μόλις οι μικροί κουραστούν και αρχίσουν την γκρίνια είναι βέβαιο ότι μπορείτε να τους καλοπιάσετε με μία κρέπα (au nutella τη ζητάμε, γιατί au chocolat οι Γάλλοι θα σας την σερβίρουν με λιωμένη σοκολάτα υγείας), με μερικά χρωματιστά macarons με διάφορα αρώματαή με ένα παγωτό από το Berthillon.

Ποτέ δεν εξαντλούνται οι διαφορετικές γεύσεις των παριζιά-
νικων macaron!

Μην αντισταθείτε στα κλισέ!

Υπάρχουν μερικές δραστηριότητες που όσο κλισέ κι αν είναι δεν μπορείτε και δεν πρέπει να τις αποφύγετε:

Ανεβείτε στον Πύργο του Άïφελ και η θέα θα σας κόψει την ανάσα! Για να φτάσετε πάρτε τη γραμμή 6 ή 9 του μετρό, κατεβείτε στη στάση Trocadero, ακολουθήστε τον κόσμο και αυτό που θα αντικρύσετε θα το θυμάστε για πάντα!

Πάτε να δείτε την Παναγία των Παρισίων ακόμη και πληγωμένη με τις σκαλωσιές μετά την καταστροφική φωτιά και θα καταλάβετε γιατί χιλιάδες κόσμου σοκαρίστηκαν και έκλαιγαν με αναφιλητά βλέποντας ζωντανά αυτό το μνημείο Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιάς να καταστρέφεται…

Κάντε βόλτα με τα περίφημα bateaux-mouches (τα καραβάκια του Σηκουάνα) κατά προτίμηση λίγο πριν το σούρουπο και θα καταλάβετε γιατί λέγεται πόλη του Φωτός.

Ανηφορήστε μέχρι την Μονμάρτη με τα καφέ, τους ζωγράφους, τις brasseries και τις γκαλερί τέχνης. Αγνοήστε τις ορδές τουριστών και ανάλογα με την εποχή απολαύστε μια ζεστή κρεμμυδόσουπα, ένα ποτήρι κρασί, μία κρέπα ή ένα «βρώμικο» φαλάφελ ή burgers.

Μικρή αλλά… χαρακτηριστική λεπτομέρεια!

Πάτε στις Βερσαλλίες. Όχι πραγματικά… Πάτε στις Βερσαλλίες για να καταλάβετε γιατί αποτελούσαν το απόλυτο σημείο χλιδής και φθόνου για όλη την αριστοκρατία της Γηραιάς Ηπείρου!

Μπείτε στις Galleries Lafayette όχι απαραίτητα για να ψωνίσετε αν δεν το θέλετε ή δεν έχετε το απαραίτητο budget, αλλά για να θαυμάσετε το απερίγραπτο εσωτερικό του κτηρίου και τη θέα στην Opéra Garnier από το roofgarden του πολυκαταστήματος!

είναι από τις πιο όμορφες βόλτες που μπορείς να κάνεις.

Αράξτε οπωσδήποτε σε ένα πάρκο. Διαλέξτε ανάμεσα στο Jardin des Tuilleries, στο Jardin du Luxembourg, στο Parc Monceau, στο Canal St Martin ή στο Parc des Buttes Chaumont και περάστε λίγες ώρες στα γρασίδια με ένα μπουκάλι Cabernet d’Anjou rosé, μερικές μπαγκέτες, ένα (ή και παραπάνω) από τα εκατοντάδες γαλλικά τυριά και jambon!

Σπάστε τα κλισέ κάνοντας κάτι διαφορετικό!

Επισκεφτείτε ένα νεκροταφείο! Το Père Lachaise είναι ένα ανοιχτό μουσείο-πάρκο, όπου τα μικρά θα βολτάρουν χαζεύοντας και εσείς θα ακολουθήσετε δεκάδες άλλους τουρίστες σε ένα ιδιότυπο τύπο «προσκυνήματος» όπου θα θαυμάσετε τα υπέροχα ταφικά μνημεία των Chopin, Οscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison, Yves Montand, Molière, Rossini.

Πάτε μία επίσκεψη στους Υπονόμους και ανακαλύψτε μία πόλη κάτω από την πόλη με δρόμους και ιστορία αιώνων!!! Μην ανησυχείτε, δε μυρίζει ούτε είναι επικίνδυνο για τους μικρούς μας φίλους!!
Τους ανοιξιάτικους μήνες πάτε στο Πάρκο Αστερίξ, ένα τεράστιο θεματικό πάρκο με απίστευτα τρενάκια και περιηγηθείτε στο γαλατικό χωριό των παιδικών μας χρόνων ενώ τα μικρά θα σας παρακαλούν για μια ακόμα φωτογραφία με τον Οβελίξ που δέρνει έναν άτυχο Ρωμαίο λεγεωνάριο!

Επισκεφθείτε τις κατακόμβες, το αχανές δίκτυο εγκαταλελειμμένων στοών ορυχείων κάτω από την πόλη που χρησιμοποιείται αιώνες τώρα ως οστεοφυλάκιο. Ένα μικρό τμήμα είναι σήμερα ανοιχτό στους επισκέπτες και ακόμα και αν δεν ενδείκνυται για τους πολύ μικρούς, οι έφηβοι της παρέας θα νιώσουν ότι πρωταγωνιστούν σε χολυγουντιανό θρίλερ!

Το Παρίσι είναι μια πόλη συνώνυμη με το φως, τον έρωτα, τη μουσική, τη μόδα, το φαγητό, την τέχνη, τα γράμματα. Για τον καθένα έχει και ένα άλλο πρόσωπο και κάθε φορά που την επισκέπτεσαι γίνεται και καλύτερη! Ανεξάντλητος προορισμός, και κυρίως, εύκολος και ασφαλής με παιδιά. Γνώμη μας: ακολουθήστε τις συμβουλές μας και ξεκινήστε να οργανώνετε ένα ταξίδι σε μια μαγική πόλη που, αν είναι το πρώτο, σίγουρα δε θα είναι το τελευταίο. Κι αν έχετε ξαναπάει, θα το ανακαλύψετε ξανά! Μέχρι τότε…

Northern Italy with kids

A good plan for a trip with young kids often includes smaller towns. Capitals are incredibly attractive, especially for a romantic couple venture, but they are not as easy or affordable for big families. This certainly does not mean it’s not doable! It just takes more planning and preparation. For our first travel plan, we chose to set off with a gorgeous and easy trip to Northern Italy before we move on to organize the customary visit to Rome!

The region we are recommending is very easy to reach. It’s a must for Northern Europeans who often drive there. There are several airports in the area which many budget airlines use. And wherever you choose to stay, wonderful things to see and do are at a small distance. It is also amazingly beautiful, especially during summer months, when we visited. It is generally a very convenient summer trip with destinations and options that will excite children and parents alike!

So, we suggest you visit the area around and near Lake Garda, less well-known than cosmopolitan (and much pricier!) Como, but beautiful nonetheless and extremely child friendly!

Getting there

First of all, you can search for plane tickets to Milan or Bologna. These airports are busier and usually offer more options for budget airlines (Ryanair, for example, flies to both from all major European airports). April or early May is a good time to book, since it is the time when summer flights are finalized and many summer offers come out. This region in Italy is a summer destination, which means it has a high season from mid-July to mid-August approximately. If you can avoid this period, your trip will be significantly cheaper. Best choice, in our opinion, is late August to early September!

However, it isn’t always easy to plan so far ahead when you’ve got kids, so if you find yourselves looking at the last moment, don’t panic! There are many ways to build the most affordable trip. Think of it in customizable building blocks. It is often the case, for example, that it’s a lot cheaper to fly to one airport and return from another, even though the round trip option seems tempting. Trying out different combinations, since we did plan at the last possible minute, we ended up flying to Bologna and returning from Bergamo (Milan) at a much lower price than the round trip.

Travel Tip: Combine different airports to fly there and back again. If you can, travel towards the end of high season.

There are of course the options of using the train and making a road trip. Italy’s northern neighbours most often drive there to camp around the lakes. There are trains to Milan from nearly all European capitals. There is also the option of travelling by coach. However, all of these options significantly increase the travel time needed and raise the cost – coach takes 23 hours from London to Milan, cheapest train fare in July for a family of five would be upwards of 500 pounds. Probably unnecessary, since it is possible to find flights starting from 29 euros per person per flight, if we search early enough!

Staying there

The first decision to make, if we haven’t driven there, is whether we will rent a car. In an area like this, renting is really the best choice, since it will give us great freedom of movement and enable us to see the most extensive part of the area without limitations placed by public transport (renting a car has many advantages for family travelers which warrant a post of its own to discuss!). If we do choose to rent, a very good plan starts in the wonderful medieval town of Bologna.

Bologna is a special town with an incredibly long history and the second largest preserved medieval historic town centre after Venice. The medieval town with dozens of towers also boasts the oldest University in Europe, with a surgical theatre worth visiting. Even younger kids will take a valuable lesson about how far science has come. Bologna offers lovely walks in pebbled streets and under arches, has many affordable options for good local food and is very safe for children who can carelessly play in the piazzas.

It is a great choice, since it is also very affordable in the summer. The Italian North heads south towards the sea in the summer months and the city is there for you to explore! Its location also makes it ideal as a base for exploring all the charming nearby towns, like Ravenna, Parma and Modena. Don’t forget Maranello, where you can find the factory and the museum of Ferrari, an attraction that guarantees an unforgettable experience for both kids and adults!

It is of course always more economical to stay outside the historic centre. It is also much more convenient, since Bologna is to a large extent pedestrianized. Hotel Cosmopolitan Bologna is an interesting choice – don’t forget to use our link for a 10% discount in your booking!

Travel Tip: In medieval towns, the historic centre is less accessible by car and significantly more expensive. We prefer a hotel outside the main town. A little research into parking lots beforehand always pays off!

Next Stop

After the first two days, we can move south and visit one of the tiny independent city-states of Italy, San Marino. A country build around a hill leading to the castle on top, a unique experience and a view to last a lifetime! San Marino is noticeably more cosmopolitan and pricier than the rest of the region, but it is absolutely worth visiting even for a few hours to allow our little ones to use their imagination playing among the medieval stones and climbing on turrets and cannons! Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have visited a supermarket to pick up supplies before that. A sandwich and some juice sitting on the walls and soaking in the view is worth lots more than an overpriced dinner for four or five where you will spend most of your time shushing the kids to avoid disturbing the high-end diners!

Right after that, we’re in the car, driving north to Verona. The first time we visited Verona, it was a true revelation! It is a gorgeous town, albeit a little bit too touristy. The largest part of the centre is again reserved for pedestrians, so you can move without fearing traffic, but taking into account the crowds that flood the little bystreets. There are open-air markets, beautiful cathedrals, an incredible arena in Piazza Bra famous for grandiose operatic performances. And of course, there’s a gelateria (ice cream shop) in every corner. Italy is known far and wide for its incomparable ice cream!

Verona is sure to excite you, even the extravagantly made-up “balcony of Juliette” which cannot really feel romantic given that it is always brimming with people taking pictures! However, the town which serves as the setting for the famous Shakespearean tragedy, has a really hospitable atmosphere full of art and aesthetics. And it also boasts a Piazza delle Herbe that you will never forget!

As always, the historic centre is too expensive to stay in, especially if we’re not prepared to stay in really old buildings! Having rented a car, we have the option of staying further away, in much better, as well as more affordable, conditions. A great choice for a family is Verona b&b , a 15-minute drive from the heart of the city, with free parking available on the premises and a lovely hostess!

The last couple of days in the region include what else? The lake! Exploring Lake Garda can consist of many different attractions, activities and places to see. We are recommending the two top attractions, in our opinion and experience: The Gardaland theme park and the unique castle town of Sirmione, literally built in the middle of the lake!

Gardaland (you can explore it virtually before you go thanks to Google Maps here!) is an enormous theme park that you can’t get enough of! It rivals Eurodisney and, according to many opinions, it is even better. It is one of the world’s top 5 theme parks. A regular day pass costs 41 euros for adults and 36 euros for children, while younger kids that are shorter than one metre high can go free (mainly because they can’t get on most of the rides). The ticket gives unlimited access to rides and attractions but does not include food or drinks. Since you’ll almost certainly be spending the whole day there, it’s wise to have packed some snacks or even a small lunch to avoid overspending in the many food stalls and cafes you will find there.

Travel Tip: If you book your Gardaland ticket online and you prepay at least 7 days in advance, you get it at a reduced price – a family of four can save 18 euros in total!

Sirmione is an experience definitely worth having! You reach it by car, after an intense but brief traffic nightmare, and, if you’re incredibly lucky, you can drive up until the gates of the castle. Beyond that, you can once again walk around without fearing traffic in a totally pedestrianized village (with the exception of public vehicles which are also a unique experience in Italy!)

You can have lunch in one of the picturesque taverns by the lake or opt for the more affordable but very interesting selection of food stalls with food from different cuisines and then enjoy your lunch at one of the tables set along the lakeside street. You can shop for bathing suits or colourful sarongs or local souvenirs in a huge variety of small or bigger shops. You can even swim in the (admittedly rather cold!) waters of the lake or dive from the piers!

Besides Sirmione, the area is beautiful and very summery. And due to its accessibility, it is a popular destination for families across Central Europe that go to the large organized campsites to spend long and leisurely summer holidays.

Travelling is second nature to me. I was blessed with a family that loved travelling (the all known group travelling-by coach-way most Greek families tried in the 80s) and I really got into it around the age of 10. So, I fell in love really early with doing luggage, trying to fit an extra pair of shoes in the backpack, choosing routes and searching for ticket offers around the world.

Unlike my husband I never doubted we would continue to travel the world. For me, seeing new places, tasting new cuisines, greeting new people and discovering new itineraries comes as naturally as breathing. Thus, I never hesitated when the idea first came up to pack for three and then for five. The only thing that stopped me was money, but I soon discovered that travelling with children was plausible if one was ready to make adjustments, changes and some serious planning.

As a foreign languages teacher, I have always believed that involving children in the process, any process, is what makes them learn best. So travelling with them is my way of teaching them how to be independent, sociable, tolerant, cosmopolitan, adventurous and above all, how to create family memories of freedom, sharing in great fun!
